Awards will be presented for the best team spirit, most strikes, highest scoring individual and highest scoring team as well as to the individual and team raising the most money for The Arc.

Proceeds from Bowling for a Change benefit The Arc of Howard County’s vocational and residential support and services, respite care, and other programs and services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Brunswick Columbia Lanes is located at 7100 Carved Stone.

The Arc Schedules Golden Anniversary Celebration Events

From November 2010 to November 2011, The Arc of Howard County will present "Golden Opportunities," an expanded slate of festivities to mark its 50th anniversary with a year-long celebration.

The Arc, which was founded in 1961, is the oldest and largest non-profit organization providing services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Howard County.

"This year, the organization that began as a volunteer parent-support group will touch the lives of more than 2,000 individuals," said Carol A. Beatty, executive director since 1993.

"To make this our most successful year yet and to set the stage for the next 50 years, The Arc is inviting local businesses and organizations to join us in celebrating our Golden Anniversary by becoming a community sponsor and making a difference in people's lives," she said.

Details on venues and times will be released as each event approaches.

Beginning on Nov. 12, The Arc will toast its lead 50th Anniversary Sponsors at "Wines and Steins," an event featuring beer, wine and fellowship. Another "Wines and Steins" is set for March 18.

The "Bowling for A Change" bowling tournament, which attracted teens as well as adults this past year, will be held Feb. 5.

The ever-popular "Chocolate Ball," sponsored by BB&T Bank, will take place on April 2. This premier event, which lives up to its delicious name, will be followed by the "Volunteer and Chocolate Ball Sponsor Appreciation Social" on April 14.

On May 19, The Arc will hold its "Celebration of Excellence: Annual Meeting and Awards." This will be followed the next month by the "3rd Annual Greenfield Compassionate Leadership Award," named in honor of Jim Greenfield of Columbia Builders, a longtime supporter of The Arc, in a June 16 dinner tribute to local philanthropists Bernie and Connie Dancel.

On Sept. 23, The Arc will partner with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks to jointly host the 2nd Annual Gary J. Arthur Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Arc will wrap up its year-long Golden Anniversary festivities with a "Celebration of Our 50th Anniversary Sponsors" on Nov. 11, 2011.
The Arc has grown from a small group of parents to one of the county's largest employers with more than 250 staff members and hundreds of volunteers, in part through the dedicated support of the Howard County community.

For information on taking part in these Golden Opportunities, please contact Kathy Swanson, The Arc's Director of Development, at 410-730-0638, ext. 306.
